Reliance Jio, a name well known for providing free services, (data in particular) held a press conference today to announce their entry in the Feature Phone or what they like to call it, the Smartphone line up. Jio is calling the JioPhone the “India Ka Smartphone”. 

We have been hearing and listening to tons of rumors and leaks of the phone for the past couple of weeks, named JioPhone. The phone is available for free*, but there is a twist here. You can purchase the phone by submitting a refundable amount of 1500 rupees as a deposit. This amount will get refunded upon returning the phone after three years, meaning the phone will be available for an effective price of zero rupees.

“Today, I am delighted to announce that JioPhone will be available to all Indians for an effective price of – Rs 0,” said Mukesh Ambani while announcing the phone. “A JioPhone user can use the Jio Phone for 36 months, and can get a full refund of the security deposit of Rs 1,500 by returning the used JioPhone. Net-net, you paynothing for the JioPhone, added Ambani.

According to Ambani, the Jio Phone is the most intelligent, affordable 4G handset in the world. A 4G phone, that supports all 24 Indian languages. The phone also comes with NFC which is a rare feature even in the top most flagship smartphones these days.

Plans for JioPhone:

 

The Jio Dhan Dhana Dhan offer will be applicable for the JioPhone for 153 Rupees per month. With this, customers will get unlimited data and voice calls for a month.

Alongside this, Jio has revealed two more recharge packs, the first for Rs 54 which offers a week’s validity while the other one comes for a price of Rs 24 with a validity of two days.

Pricing and Availability:

The JioPhone will be available for beta testing starting 15th August and for Public Registrations starting 24th August, while being available in September. As far as price is concerned, customers will have to deposit 1500 rupees while buying the handset.
